This web site offers free support to students and lecturers using Understanding Phonetics by Patricia Ashby, Emeritus Fellow to the University of Westminster and National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

We hope that you will find this website a helpful companion to your book.

Resources for students include a Field Notebook that guides you step-by-step through the detailed phonetic description of a word, ear-training exercises and accompanying audio files to give you practice listening for specific phonetic characteristics in words spoken by native speakers of several languages, answers to the exercises within the book, and useful web links to help you take your study of phonetics further.
